The world

Here's how the world works, from the ground up.

It grows from a seed

Every world starts from a seed, and the game builds it in layers: the shape of the land first, then erosion, ridges, caves, climate, and finally the biomes and what grows in them. Nothing is built ahead of time. The world appears around you as you walk, and the same seed gives everyone exactly the same world, down to every tree.

The terrain isn't a heightmap, which is a fancy way of saying the ground can fold over itself. That's why you get overhangs, arches, sheer cliffs and caves that open in the side of a hill. The horizon is real terrain too, out to about 700 blocks.

Biomes

Biomes come from climate, so they blend into each other instead of meeting in hard lines. Walk out of the meadow and the grass thins into dry lanes, or the trees get bigger until you're under redwoods, or the ground climbs into snow and then ice.

  • Meadow

Where you start. Long grass and flowers you can pick, and the meadow remembers what you've picked.

  • Redwood forest

Huge trunks and deep shade. There's a cave bear in here that hunts goblins.

  • Fairy glades

    Soft light and strange flowers.

  • Snowfields

Frost yaks, cloud rams, and snow where other places get rain.

  • Ice wastes

High, cold and bright, with glaciers and not much shelter.

  • Mesa

Stepped red cliffs and orc country.

  • Ocean

Open water out past the coast.

  • Volcano

    Black rock, ash and lava.

Underground

Dig down and you'll hit caverns, crystal depths and, if you keep going, deeper layers under all of it. Some caves are flooded and some are dry.

Lava tubes

Tunnels climb and dip between big chambers: a terraced dome, a rift with a rock bridge over a chasm, a pillared hall, a crater that steps down, and a grotto full of stalactites.

The volcano

Lava pools glow before they spit at you, so give them room.

Water and lava

Both flow. They spread, pour off edges and fall. Rivers run downhill into lakes, and where lava meets water it hardens into Blackstone.

Swimming

Swim on the surface or dive. Underwater everything goes soft and teal.

A courtyard at night in the rain, lit by lamps

Day, night and weather

A full day is 24 minutes. Weather rolls in and changes every few minutes, and everyone on a server shares the same sky. Rain turns to snow in the cold and stays out of the dry lanes. Get under a roof and the rain goes quiet. Storms flash first and the thunder follows.

At night the nocturnal creatures wake up and the friendly ones settle down to sleep.

Light

Light is worked out from the actual blocks. The sun only gets in where there's a real gap, like a cave mouth, a doorway or a window you cut yourself. A window throws a proper shaft across the floor, and a forest canopy stays dark underneath. Fires and lamps light a room and cast their own shadows.

The arena and its village from above

Places

The arena is a cobblestone colosseum with a village behind it. The villagers have real jobs: one harvests grain, one mills it, one bakes, one serves the food.

Rookfall Manor is an old manor with a chess hall. The mesa camp is where the orcs live, out on the red cliffs.

A minimap and a full map fill in as you explore, and everyone in your world shares what's been found.

Safe start, hard edges

Spawn is safe, with only friendly creatures nearby. Head out and the monsters build up, and they keep getting tougher the further you go. Big monsters live further out, and dragons are way out past 1,024 blocks.
